Carl Herberger VP of security solutions, Radware USA: Facebook hacked: a reminder for on-line businesses

January 2011 by Carl Herberger VP of security solutions, Radware USA

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg in fan-page was hacked, defaced and closed down. From the message the attacker posted as Zuckerberg status update it is clear this is another hacktivist act – following other recent examples such as WikiLeaks revenge attacks.

The damage is minimal and we should relate this case as a hoax. But yet, this is a continued
warning for online business and financial services that they are endangered and it is only a
matter of time until a particular business will be targeted by cybercrime activities. There is a
good chance that many businesses have already been a victim for cyber criminal activity even
without noticing it.

To defend online businesses against emerging network attacks, they should invest in network behavioral analysis (NBA) tools and web application firewalls (WAF), which are able to counter zero-day attacks, application misuse attacks, web defacement and prevent data breaches in real-time – before a business has suffered from irreversible damage.

As a side warning to users: anything posted or shared using social networking applications can easily be leaked, hacked or be misused. Attackers take advantage of information posted to learn about the user’s habits, steal their identity, spread malware to their friends’ cycle and more – without being noticed. So, beware!
