Aftab Afzal, SkyRecon comments the new case of data loss

August 2008 by Aftab Afzal, UK Sales Manager for SkyRecon

“We at SkyRecon are not surprised that data leakage cases are becoming a regular occurrence in the UK, as most companies and organisations are effectively sitting ducks. Despite the availability of suitable IT security solutions, the necessary security measures are still not being put into place. The presence of huge databases, private information stored on personal computers, and the use of mobile devices such as USB keys and laptops, have significantly increased the risks of data leakage,” comments Aftab Afzal, UK Sales Manager for SkyRecon Systems.

“Is this an isolated problem affecting just the UK? Of course not, data leakage is happening in other countries too, but not all countries require companies make announcements alerting their customers to what has happened. Companies and organisations must take note that anti-virus and password protection is not enough - device control and on the fly data encryption together are far more effective, preventing thieves from being able to take, view or use the private data. We understand that it can be difficult for companies today to acquire and deploy different security modules to answer their numerous security needs, however unified solutions do exist, saving time and making protecting sensitive data easier and effective.”

“It is good that more of these types of incidents are being exposed, however we are aware that is only the tip of the iceberg and that we should recognise that USB keys are only one data loss vector, previous cases have seen CD’s and printed information lost, these type of losses are a lot harder to monitor. We are currently working with central and local government organisations to establish DLP (Data Loss Prevention) strategies. A number of local government organisations are working with us to provide assistance and tools to comply with the government’s connects program (otherwise known as ‘coco’) http://www.govconnect.gov.uk/. Perhaps it’s time to extend similar data security guideline to the rest of the public sector.”
