AVG’s Karel Obluk Appointed to Board of Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization

August 2008 by Marc Jacob

Karel Obluk, Chief Technology Officer at AVG Technologies, a leading developer of internet security software, has been appointed to the initial board of the new Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO).

AMTSO was founded in Bilbao, Spain, in February 2008 as a result of industry-wide concern about an increasing disconnect between what anti-malware technologies actually do, and the testing methodologies used to evaluate them. As anti-malware solutions have become more complex, many traditional tests are no longer able to properly evaluate product effectiveness, resulting in product reviews that may be incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading.

AMTSO is focused on the global need for improvements in the objectivity, quality and relevance of testing methodologies. The organisation also aims to promulgate universally adopted standards and guidelines for anti-malware testing. Pursuant to its preliminary charter, AMTSO will:

Provide a forum for discussions related to the testing of anti-malware and related products;

Develop and publicise objective standards and best practices for testing of anti-malware and related products;
Promote education and awareness of issues related to the testing of anti-malware and related products;
Provide tools and resources to aid standards-based testing methodologies; and,
Provide analysis and review of current and future testing of anti-malware and related products.

About the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO)

Founded in February 2008 in Bilbao, Spain, AMTSO isdedicated to helping improve the objectivity, quality and relevance of anti-malware technology testing. Membership comprises 40 security software technologists and anti-malware testers from around the world, and is open to academics, reviewers, testers and vendors, subject to guidelines determined by AMTSO. Additional information regarding the organisation, including charter documents, membership and educational materials, is available on the AMTSO website at www.amtso.org.
