APWG Conference Accepts Record Number of Academic Research Papers on Cybercrime

September 2013 by Marc Jacob

The eighth annual eCrime Researchers Summit, a peer-reviewed research conference for academic and industrial researchers in cybercrime studies, accepted a record 15 submissions to be presented next week, each exploring the outer limits of cybercrime technologies, marketplaces, counterfeiting and electronic money laundering.

The APWG’s research conference is collocated with the APWG’s annual general Members Meeting, held this year in San Francisco from Sept. 16-19, with its travel scholarships underwritten by the IEEE Standards Association and industrial sponsors, this year including the CERT Software Engineering Institute, Marble Security, Symantec and Versafe. Its proceedings are published by the IEEE. Accepted papers’ authors go on to leading positions in academia, to research and operational positions in industry (often in APWG member companies) and to found and staff start-ups.

Program Co-Chair Dr. Tyler Moore, of Southern Methodist University, said, “We are very excited by the high-quality selection of research papers appearing in the peer-reviewed technical program. Each paper was reviewed by at least three world experts in e-crime research, and the final program was selected following a vigorous online discussion of the program committee.

“Fighting e-crime requires more than a purely technical approach, and this year’s program reflects that: in addition to papers from computer scientists, we will hear the perspectives of economists, criminologists and political scientists. The breadth of topics presented is also great. Topics include underground markets, malware, counterfeit goods, money laundering with digital currencies, online dating crimes, and of course, phishing,” Dr. Moore said.

“What’s so compelling about the APWG eCrime Researchers Summit is that it’s the only academic research conference dedicated to the study and disruption of cybercrime. Consequently, we get to dive deeper into the world of cybercrime than anywhere else,” Dr. Moore said.

The annual research conference was conceived by APWG Secretary General Peter Cassidy in 2006 as a venue for the presentation of the state-of-the-art research into electronic crime, engaging every aspect of its development (technical, behavioral, social, economic and legal) as well as technologies and techniques for its detection, related forensics as well its prevention and intervention.

The program has accepted and presented papers from research institutes around the world, including Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Ballarat, Indiana University, Georgia Institute of Technology, City University of Hong Kong, University of Washington, Texas State University, Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences, Mississippi State University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, New York University at Buffalo, University of Konstanz, University of Konstanz, University College Dublin and Southern Methodist University.

This year papers come from students, faculty and employees of Carleton University, PayPal, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Rutgers University, Carnegie Mellon University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Internet Network Information Center, Asia University, Southern Methodist University, Internet Identity, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Drexel University, Indiana University, George Mason University, University of Münster, Michigan State University, East Carolina University and George Mason University.
