1 in 5 subject to cyber attack - ACSN comment

April 2017 by John Madelin, CEO at Reliance acsn

Following the news that one in five British companies were subject to a cyber-attack
in 2016, John Madelin, CEO at Reliance ACSN, comments:

News that one in five British companies has been subject to a cyber-attack is not
surprising. A cyber-attack can mean anything from an entry-level phishing scam -
which targets every business large or small - to sophisticated and targeted
high-impact attacks, and everything in between. What is clear is there is a distinct
lack of knowledge on how organisations can protect themselves.

Part of the problem is the lack of awareness that businesses have when it comes to
their data. The vast majority of business don’t know what their critical data is,
where it’s stored and who has access to it. This combined with a mix and match
approach to security technologies has resulted in a patchwork of solutions being
deployed that fail to fully protect an organisation from attack.

There needs to be a culture shift in the way the business community and government
approaches cyber-security. The current security systems that many organisations use
to hold people’s data, like retailers and banks, just aren’t being deployed and
managed in the right way. It’s about using the right technology and processes,
including proper alerting and alarming, but also actively hunting for cybercrime.
Pragmatism and business sense can make relatively modest investments in good cyber
hygiene pay off. Until interest and focus in cyber-security is taken seriously
across business owners up and down the organisation instead of being approached as a
dark art we will continue to be fighting an uphill battle.
