Vigil@nce - Windows: privilege escalation via Create Process
February 2015 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
A local attacker can use the CreateProcess() function on Windows,
in order to escalate his privileges.
Impacted products: Windows 2008 R0, Windows 2008 R2, Microsoft
Windows 2012, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows RT
Severity: 2/4
Creation date: 10/02/2015
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The CreateProcess() function of Windows creates a new process on
the system.
The SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege (SE_ASSIGNPRIMARYTOKEN_NAME)
privilege is used to change the "primary token" of a process.
However, when a process is created with SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege,
Windows does not correctly manage the impersonation.
A local attacker can therefore use the CreateProcess() function on
Windows, in order to escalate his privileges.
