Vigil@nce - Windows: memory corruption via FASTFAT FAT32

October 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can insert an USB key with a malicious FAT32
partition, to generate a memory corruption in FASTFAT of Windows,
in order to trigger a denial of service, and possibly to execute
code.

Impacted products: Windows 2003, Windows 2008 R0, Windows Vista

Severity: 2/4

Creation date: 14/10/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Windows FASTFAT driver manages FAT32 file systems.

However, a malformed FAT32 partition triggers a buffer
under-allocation, a then a memory corruption.

A local attacker can therefore insert an USB key with a malicious
FAT32 partition, to generate a memory corruption in FASTFAT of
Windows, in order to trigger a denial of service, and possibly to
execute code.
