Vigil@nce - Symfony: directory traversal via _locale

July 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can traverse directories via _locale of Symfony, in
order to read a file outside the service root path.

Impacted products: Symfony

Severity: 2/4

Creation date: 16/07/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Symfony product offers a web service.

However, the Locale (language) sent by users is directly inserted
in an access path such as "/app/_locale/". Sequences such as
"/.." can thus be used to go in the upper directory.

An attacker can therefore traverse directories via _locale of
Symfony, in order to read a file outside the service root path.
