Vigil@nce: OpenSolaris, denial of service via proc

July 2009 by Vigil@nce

A local attacker on a x86 processor can use /proc in order to stop the system.

Severity: 1/4

Consequences: denial of service of computer

Provenance: user shell

Means of attack: no proof of concept, no attack

Ability of attacker: expert (4/4)

Confidence: confirmed by the editor (5/5)

Diffusion of the vulnerable configuration: high (3/3)

Creation date: 07/07/2009

IMPACTED PRODUCTS

- OpenSolaris

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The proc file system, generally mounted on /proc, is used to directly access to system information.

Under a x86 processor, the LDT (Local Descriptor Table) is used to segment the memory of each process.

The ldt_rewrite_syscall() function of the usr/src/uts/i86pc/os/trap.c file updates the LDT of a process.

A local attacker can generate an error in ldt_rewrite_syscall() via /proc. Technical details are unknown.

A local attacker can therefore create a denial of service.
