Vigil@nce - OpenBSD: denial of service via virtio

December 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can use virtio of OpenBSD, in order to trigger a
denial of service.

Impacted products: OpenBSD

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 11/12/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The virtio interface of the OpenBSD kernel is used by guest
systems to access to virtualized hardware.

Memory barriers force the processor to use a defined sequence on
memory operations.

However, virtio does not use memory barriers.

An attacker can therefore use virtio of OpenBSD, in order to
trigger a denial of service.
