Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via XFS overlayfs rename

July 2016 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can use rename() on the Linux kernel with
overlayfs on XFS, in order to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Linux.

Severity: 1/4.

Creation date: 12/07/2016.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Linux kernel supports overlayfs on an XFS filesystem.

However, if the rename() system call is used to rename a link on
overlayfs, a fatal error occurs.

A local attacker can therefore use rename() on the Linux kernel
with overlayfs on XFS, in order to trigger a denial of service.
