Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via xfs_da3_fixhashpath
October 2014 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
A local attacker can manipulate directories on an XFS filesystem
with the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of service.
– Impacted products: Linux
– Severity: 1/4
– Creation date: 14/10/2014
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The Linux kernel supports XFS filesystems.
This file system uses a tree to store access paths to files. This
tree uses a hash to identify paths in an optimized way. However,
by creating numerous directories, a local attacker can create a
hash collision, which triggers a fatal error in
xfs_da3_fixhashpath().
A local attacker can therefore manipulate directories on an XFS
filesystem with the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of
service.
