Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: NULL pointer dereference via nf_nat_redirect_ipv4
February 2016 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced in
nf_nat_redirect_ipv4() of the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a
denial of service.
Impacted products: Fedora, Linux, Ubuntu.
Severity: 1/4.
Creation date: 27/01/2016.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The Linux kernel implements the redirection for the IP address
translation in the netfilter/nf_nat_redirect.c file.
However, when an interface is not fully configured, and receives a
packet to translate, the nf_nat_redirect_ipv4() function does not
check if a pointer is NULL, before using it.
An attacker can therefore force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced
in nf_nat_redirect_ipv4() of the Linux kernel, in order to trigger
a denial of service.
