Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: NULL pointer dereference via SMB2_tcon
October 2014 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced in the
SMB2_tcon() function of the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a
denial of service.
Impacted products: Linux
Severity: 2/4
Creation date: 17/09/2014
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The Linux kernel incorporates a CIFS/Samba client, in order to
mount remote shares.
However, the SMB2_tcon() function of the fs/cifs/smb2pdu.c file
does not check if a pointer is NULL, before using it.
An attacker can therefore force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced
in the SMB2_tcon() function of the Linux kernel, in order to
trigger a denial of service.
