Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: NULL pointer dereference via netlink sendmsg
August 2014 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
A local privileged attacker can force a NULL pointer to be
dereferenced in Netlink via a sendmsg() on the Linux kernel, in
order to trigger a denial of service.
Impacted products: Linux
Severity: 1/4
Creation date: 14/08/2014
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The sendmsg() system call is used to send a message, for example
on a Netlink socket.
However, if the message name is NULL, the netlink_sendmsg()
function of the net/netlink/af_netlink.c file does not check if
this pointer is NULL, before using it.
A local privileged attacker can therefore force a NULL pointer to
be dereferenced in Netlink via a sendmsg() on the Linux kernel, in
order to trigger a denial of service.
