Vigil@nce - LibTIFF: denial of service via Lines
November 2015 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can create a malicious image, and send it to an
application linked to LibTIFF, in order to trigger a denial of
service.
Impacted products: LibTIFF.
Severity: 2/4.
Creation date: 24/09/2015.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The LibTIFF library allocates memory (number of lines by number of
rows) to store images.
However, if the number of lines of an image is very large, LibTIFF
does not forbid the huge memory allocation, which leads to a large
memory consumption, and possibly to the application being killed
by OOM-Killer (Out Of Memory).
An attacker can therefore create a malicious image, and send it to
an application linked to LibTIFF, in order to trigger a denial of
service.
