Vigil@nce - FreeBSD: denial of service via routed
October 2015 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can force an assertion error in routed of FreeBSD, in
order to trigger a denial of service.
– Impacted products: FreeBSD.
– Severity: 2/4.
– Creation date: 06/08/2015.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The FreeBSD routed daemon implements RIP (Routing Information
Protocol).
However, when a RIP packet is for an indirect router, an assertion
error occurs because developers did not expect this case, which
stops the process.
An attacker can therefore force an assertion error in routed of
FreeBSD, in order to trigger a denial of service.
