Vigil@nce - Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client: privilege escalation

November 2015 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can use Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client,
in order to escalate his privileges on Linux or Mac OS X.

Impacted products: Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

Severity: 2/4.

Creation date: 24/09/2015.

Revision date: 24/09/2015.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client product can be
installed on Linux (archive .tar.gz) and Mac OS X (archive .dmg).

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client calls the
/opt/cisco/anyconnect/bin/vpndownloader.app/Contents/Resources/install-dmg.sh
script (on Mac OS X) with root privileges. However, a local
attacker can alter the $DMG variable, to mount a DMG file at a
chosen path (/private/etc), and alter the configuration, to gain
root privileges.

A local attacker can therefore use Cisco AnyConnect Secure
Mobility Client, in order to escalate his privileges on Linux or
Mac OS X.
