Software Developers get new guidelines on Unsafe Cryptographic Algorithms

March 2009 by Marc Jacob

Software developers around the world will welcome a new report which provides a guide to cryptographic algorithms—detailing which ones to use, which ones not to use and when it’s appropriate to use them. Today, with so many algorithms available, selecting the most appropriate and effective one is unclear and could result substandard security.

The new manifesto of cryptographic algorithms for both encryption and hashing has been put together by a group of security experts from Fortify’s Security Research Group. The manifesto will aid developers as they are writing code to avoid algorithms that security experts have deemed unsafe. The manifesto also sets out to prevent the misuse of algorithms that are sometimes abused.

Fortify customers will receive a new rulepack update that will automatically warn and advise developers about the misuse of cryptographic algorithms.
