Shoddy data-stripping exposes firms to hack attacks - Comments from Smoothwall

July 2017 by Smoothwall

Following a new study which found that large firms are vulnerable to targeted hack attacks because they do little to strip data from files on their websites, if you are covering the story, please find additional commentary from Rob Wilkinson, Corporate Security Specialist at Smoothwall on what businesses need to be doing to make their data more secure.

Rob Wilkinson, Corporate Security Specialist at Smoothwall:

“The fact that firms are finding themselves under threat because they do very little to remove data from their files on their sites is a concern, especially when it should be basic housekeeping. As data increasingly becomes a new currency, businesses need to ensure that they have strict protocols in place to protect their data, so it cannot be abused by hackers. Even simple data such as names and IDs in documents can be used to infiltrate a company, and as hackers find more and more ways in, companies need to ensure that they are blocking all possible avenues in and take file sweeps as seriously as they would any other threat. Data taken from one of these sweeps could then be compared to information from other breaches, helping create a profile of the user and making it easier to hack an account.

“It is imperative, therefore, that companies have a robust security system in place in order to protect themselves once they fall victim to an attack. It is essential that they start with the basics. Beginning with a firewall, encryption and good security software, if companies have those measures in place and continue to layer on top of that, then it will reduce the chances of a data breach or attack.

“However security needs to be taken seriously throughout companies by all of their staff; this means cleaning up their documents before they are posted online. It is common knowledge now that the majority of security breaches occur due to human error. Ensuring a strong security culture is instilled throughout the workforce therefore is vital to ensure staff are constantly vigilant and aware of the threats. Security needs to be taken seriously at all points of the organisation, to ensure that all employees understand the risks of their actions and know the security processes in place should an incident occur to mitigate the risks.”
