Securing Ireland’s ‘Digital Ocean’: The Marine Institute Chooses Juniper Networks to Protect IoT-Driven Data Operations

December 2017 by Marc Jacob

Juniper Networks announced that The Marine Institute, Ireland’s national agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation, has selected Juniper Networks® Software-Defined Secure Networks (SDSN) platform to protect mission-critical environmental data gathered through research vessel surveys, remote sensors and a new subsea observatory.

Formerly using traditional firewalls, The Marine Institute needed greater granularity when accessing a multitude of applications, as well as the ability to allow various types of users, including its own staff and project partners, securely onto its local network. The Marine Institute required a comprehensive security solution with the ability to offer complete protection for its physical offices, research vessels, subsea observatory and frequently mobile staff. Juniper solutions gave the organization a lot more capability in this space than any other vendor.

The Marine Institute, a government agency founded to protect, promote and explore Ireland’s 880,000² km of ocean resources, provides advice, policy and monitoring of marine waters, dealing with issues such as the health of the food chain and research into levels of marine species stocks. Its wide remit includes collecting large amounts of scientific data from its SmartBay subsea observatory and other ongoing research projects. This information is vital to accelerating a range of developments across the marine sector and contributes to environmental monitoring, the development of advanced marine technologies, education and research, as well as maritime security.

News Highlights:

• The Marine Institute deployed Juniper Networks® SRX1500 Series Services Gateways managed by Junos Space Security Director and added Juniper Sky Advanced Threat Prevention (Sky ATP) to provide real-time monitoring of internet traffic to and from its local area network. The SRX Series provides The Marine Institute high-performance security with advanced, integrated threat intelligence, delivered on a scalable and resilient platform.

• Juniper’s Sky ATP helps The Marine Institute defend its network and data resources against malware threats by automatically screening downloads and applications before allowing them to enter the network. Any infected downloads and applications detected are automatically quarantined.

• Junos Space Security Director protects against emerging and existing threats in near real-time with automated policy management, enforcement and expansive visibility through an intuitive, centralized interface. Using intuitive dashboards and reporting features, it offers insight into internal and external-borne threats, compromised devices and risky applications.

• The Marine Institute selected Juniper Networks’ Elite partner Agile Networks, Ireland’s leading IT network integrator, to design and deliver the security solution.

“Our national marine facilities are a significant addition to Ireland’s IoT infrastructure. Whilst we assist marine researchers and businesses involved in the ‘blue economy,’ we also provide scientific and technical advice to the government to help inform policy and to support the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine resource. With a huge amount of valuable data in our care, we needed a security solution that is flexible and with unified threat management capability to protect our entire operations system at every level of our network. The Juniper solution allowed us to achieve our goals successfully. ”
– Keith Manson, IT systems & operations manager at The Marine Institute

“Data-driven organizations like The Marine Institute must ensure agile, efficient and scalable protection as they collect, maintain and disseminate information. This deployment is a great example of how IoT enables digital innovation, but also creates a new security challenge with the volume and type of data it loads onto the network. Juniper is pleased to support The Marine Institute through this challenge with maximum performance and comprehensive threat protection across the network.” Mihir Maniar, vice president of security product management at Juniper Networks
