Fujitsu comment: TSB to roll out iris scanning tech

July 2017 by Stuart Rye, Director, Business Development, Financial Services at Fujitsu UK

TSB customers will be the first bank in Europe to introduce iris technology to its mobile banking app. Stuart Rye, Director, Business Development, Financial Services at Fujitsu UK & Ireland responded to the news with:

“The news that TSB will be the first bank in Europe to introduce iris recognition into its mobile banking app is another example of an ongoing major change in consumer needs and demands. After all, it was report from MasterCard and the University of Oxford which found biometrics authentication to be consumers’ preferred choice for their financial services security.

And as a step up from the Fingerprint login TSB already support, it’s encouraging they acknowledge the importance of looking at higher security biometrics. Indeed, the financial services industry well-known for its reputation for maintaining customer confidentiality and security, the industry is eager to enhance security with unique identifying measures further, helping to improve customer service.

Biometrics technologies seeks to deploy solutions which enhance and reinforce security, while making the customer interaction easy to undertake. And by being unique to the individual helps achieve this goal. Their use often reduces the use of passwords, or even eliminates them altogether, while also providing an audit trail. And when deployed to help identify customers, their use can speed up the identification and log-on process, by removing the need for security questions.

Indeed, in recent months, we have been seeing a growing confidence and adoption in the security and effectiveness of biometric technologies, perhaps in part brought about by both Android and Apple mobile devices using finger and thumb print scanner technology as an unlocking option for users. As this technology move from new to familiar, there’s a natural acceptance and understanding, helping to break down any previous barriers to entry. Looking ahead, it will be crucial for providers of financial services to be able to deliver multi-authentication if they are to comply with PSD2 requirements which traditional solutions will not.”
