Expert Comment: Vice Society claims responsibility for cyber attack on Medical University

June 2022 by Dr Darren Williams, CEO and Co-founder at ransomware specialists, Blackfog

In light of the news that Vice Society ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for last week’s cyber-attack against the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, which has 3,400 students and 2,200 employees, causing severe IT service disruption and the alleged theft of data, please find expert comment from Dr Darren Williams, CEO and Co-founder at ransomware specialists, Blackfog:

“When we look at the recent attacks claimed by the Vice Society criminal gang we see a focus on education, followed by government. Both sectors are often soft targets as they typically suffer from a lack of preparation, resources, and investment in cybersecurity. It’s likely that the Medical University of Innsbruck fell into this category. Rather than being specifically targeted by the criminal gang, its more likely they were likely easy prey.”
