CommonIT raises €500,000 in first-round funding with Rhône-Alpes Création and Expansinvest
October 2009  by Marc Jacob

French start-up commonIT, which has developed a unique approach to protecting the enterprise against web-based attacks with user and application-based isolation of browser sessions in hosted virtual machines, today announced it has secured €500k in first-round funding. The investment by the Rhône-Alpes Création and Expansinvest funds will allow commonIT to accelerate business and sales development initiatives.

Founded in Lyon in January 2009, commonIT’s Virtual Browser solution is an innovative approach to protecting the enterprise against web-based threats to information resources. The patented technology, winner of an award for innovation from the French Ministry of Research, delivers previously unattainable levels of security for the enterprise web, whether users are browsing the internet or using business-critical internal applications. With a management team comprising experienced information security professionals, commonIT, with a channel distribution model based on a network of certified value-added resellers, is seeing rapid development in sales.

CommonIT will be investing this fresh funding in channel development and in accelerating version 2.0 of the Virtual Browser solution, to be released in the first quarter of 2010. “in a market which is continuously evolving, it’s essential for us to ensure we have the means to sustain our strategic development. Rhône-Alpes Création and Expansinvest have the capacity to partner with us during the initial phases of product and brand development” explains Daniel Fages, CEO and co-founder of commonIT.

Besides confirming the positioning of the Virtual Browser solution and its relevance to the market, this first round of funding is also a validation of the business model put in place by commonIT. “The professionalism shown by the four co-founders with the successful development and commercialisation of the first release of the product is proof of the skills and business knowledge they bring to the commonIT project. We have no doubt that the market for web application security offers exceptional opportunities for growth” says Mathieu Viallard, Director of Business Development at Rhône-Alpes Création.
