Comment from Callsign on the Ryder Review

June 2022 by Amir Nooriala, chief commercial officer, Callsign

Following the conclusion of Matthew Ryder’s review around the laws
governing biometrics, the comment from Amir Nooriala,
CCO at digital identity pioneer Callsign.

_"The conclusion of Matthew Ryder QC’s review around the laws governing
biometrics should come as little surprise. The indiscriminate use of
intrusive static biometric technologies in our society is now well
understood, and we welcome the introduction of new legislation in the
future to strike a better balance between privacy and security.
Controversy around static biometrics such as facial recognition stems
from the fact that it is not privacy preserving and as a result is not
trusted by the wider public. Our own research revealed that only 38% of
UK consumers feel comfortable using static biometrics, such as
fingerprint ID or facial recognition, to confirm their identity when
using a service or buying a product._

_"You can change your password easily, but you cannot change your face
or thumbprint in the same way. This means the risk of personal data
intrusion is higher and trusting third parties with that data is
problematic. However, technologies such as behavioural biometrics are
more satisfactory from a privacy perspective as they do not use
personally identifiable information. Businesses and governments need to
build privacy-first technology solutions from the ground up to ensure a
user’s journey is delivered with best-in-class security, while ensuring
they only hold the information that is completely necessary, thereby
building trust between organisations and consumers."_
