Comment: Samba vulnerability - next WannaCry? Mimecast

May 2017 by Steven Malone, director of security product management at email security firm Mimecast

In response to reports today that a security vulnerability in Samba – the popular and free networking software developed for Linux and Unix - could leave unpatched machines open to an attack similar to WannaCry, the comment below from Steve Malone, director of security product management at Mimecast.

“The sad truth is that if you pick any random CVE, you’ll find the potential for a major breach or outbreak. Despite painful and major incidents like WannaCry, a vast number of organisations either can’t or won’t apply good IT best practices.

“It’s easy to give advice like “patch all your systems all the time!!!” but the reality is that this doesn’t happen. A utopian world where vendors, customers, administrators and end users all work together to rid the world of cybersecurity issues will never be a reality. Our best hope is that organisations will continue to place importance and focus on implementing cyber resilience strategies that combat against new and emerging cyberattacks, human error and downtime.”
