Check Point Research Team Develops an Open Source Toolkit for Analysing Android Malware

March 2015 by Marc Jacob

Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd., the largest pure-play security vendor globally, announced it has developed a free open-source toolkit to enable faster, easier identification of malware targeting Google’s Android operating system by security vendors and mobile app developers.

Developed by the Check Point Malware and Vulnerability Research Group, CuckooDroid is an automated malware emulation and analysis framework based on the popular Cuckoo sandbox open source project. It dramatically reduces the time needed to inspect Android malware and infected apps, and to develop security measures to counter new threats. Making the solution freely available will help to accelerate detection of malicious Android apps, and improve mobile security industry-wide.

Malicious Android mobile apps being offered on Google Play account for over 95% of all mobile malware. Examples of infected apps include the Durak card game, which has been downloaded over 15 million times.

CuckooDroid uses a range of techniques to analyse apps, and produces a detailed report describing exactly what an app does when run, highlighting any suspicious or malware-like behaviour without need for manual intervention. The tool is highly customisable and extensible using resources from the large Cuckoo developer community.

CuckooDroid’s capabilities were presented at BlackHat Asia by its developers, Idan Revivo and Ofer Caspi from Check Point’s Malware and Vulnerability Research Group.

Check Point’s Malware and Vulnerability Research Group regularly performs assessments of common software and develops new solutions to ensure the security of Internet users worldwide.
